“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. My beloved is mine, and I am his…” (Song of Songs 2:4, 16a)
During a trip to western Europe one of several countries my husband and I visited was Belgium. We walked along the cobbled streets wandering in and out of the many quaint shops. One that particularly caught my attention had a display window filled with beautiful lace parasols. After spending a considerable amount of time trying to decide which parasol to purchase, I changed my mind in favor of what I would actually use, leaving the shop with several beautiful lace-edged handkerchiefs.
Long after returning to the states I was reminded of those pretty parasols while driving and pouring out my heart to God. “I feel so uncovered,” I cried. “Marriage is challenging and I expect more.” I pictured my husband’s “covering” of me as an umbrella blown inside out by contrary winds, and those silver spokes sticking out where fabric should be.
The Lord listened to my lament and then lovingly reminded me of the parasols. Those parasols are made of lace—filled with “holes” by design. It’s what makes them beautiful. The differing shapes, sizes, and patterns are what make each one unique. Parasols serve their purpose in providing the user with shade from the harsh sun. Overarching your husband’s love and care of you is My love and care. You’re never uncovered, unloved, or unattended.
I dried my tears, pondering the words the Lord spoke to my spirit from an old Sunday school song: “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine, His banner over me is love.” Overarching Paul’s love for me is God’s love. “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine, His banner over me is love.” I am never uncovered. “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine, His banner over me is love. His banner over me is love.”
God promised to supply my every need. “He sits me at His banqueting table, His banner over me is love.” God provides a table for His beloved children in the presence of our enemies. “He sits me at His banqueting table, His banner over me is love.” He anoints my head with oil. My cup overflows. “He sits me at His banqueting table, His banner over me is love. His banner over me is love.”
The words to that children’s song fill my heart and lift my spirits. We belong to the Lord. He covers us with His love. He provides for His own, not sparingly but lavishly—a banquet. God is in no rush. He spares no expense. At the cost of His beloved Son, God purchased us and provides for us. Whenever we expect someone else to do what only God can do, they will never be enough. Therefore, do not leave the umbrella of love, safety, and security that can only be found in Him. Don’t move, God’s got you covered.

Thank you 1st Lady Meredith this is a simple biblical truth His Banner OVER me. It is shielding me from the elements around. It is my task to hold the banner up.
Amen! Sometimes the simplest things hold such profound truth. 💕
Thank you Jesus ! God gives his love not sparingly but LAVISHLY! 🙌🏽🙌🏽❤️❤️
No snacks or “fast food” with Him. God lavishes His love upon us–a banquet❣️
Thank you for a beautiful reminder. I am His!❤
Yes beloved, you are indeed❣️
His banner is truly over me! One phrase popped out at me in this beautiful devotional. The phrase is “God is in no rush”. How I’ve learned this over these past six months as I recover from surgery. I want this to be over. I want to feel like my old self again, to have all the energy I had before, to be able to do the things I did before but God says, “Betty, I’m in no rush. Let me heal you in My time. Let me strengthen you for today, don’t try to get ahead of Me.. Full recovery will come but it will be in My time.” And that’s the lesson I’ve learned through these several months, and several more to come…..Recovery is in His time not my time. But I rest in the assurance that He covers me; that I am loved and He won’t ever leave me, as you say Meredith, He will never leave me unattended. His banner indeed over me! Praise God Meredith for your heart-touching devotional. Love you!
Dearest Betts,
Your comment reminds me of that old song by the Supremes, You Can’t Hurry Love. God knows what He’s doing. You’re in good hands. You’ve labored hard and long for the King and His Kingdom. Enjoy this time of rest with the Great Physician. Love and prayers, dear friend❣️
What a beautiful reminder of God’s love for us🙌🏾🙌🏾-Thanks my sister♥️ , “He. Loves me, oh Yes, He loves me! “-Oh How HE loves me!♥️
His love “never fails. It never gives up. It never runs out on me…” God loves you and I do too❣️
This is a burden-lifting piece, I have been bothered and constantly whining to myself how my husband is just not enough. God indeed is my sufficiency and his sure banner over me is love.
Praise the Lord. So glad that a burden’s been lifted. God’s got you covered. Keep looking to Him❣️
Beautiful! The Overarching Covering is God’s Love! I loved teaching this song to my Sunshine Band…HIS BANNER OVER ME IS LOVE! I miss my babies! 😔 🎶 ✝️
Thanks Jacqi! What Bible truths we learned as/ or teach youngsters still resonates. “His banner over me is love❣️”
Do not leave the umbrella of his love, safety and security that can only be found in him. We are safe in his arm. When we leave his covering we can expect any and everything to happen. This was good Meredith.
Praise the Lord. After a very challenging day, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a letter you wrote many years ago. I decided to search “wives in touch”, and happened upon this post. How refreshing! Are used to play the song, ” Hos Banner Over Me Is Love” to my children, as well as in my Children Ministry. It is comforting to be reminded of God’s enduring love for his children.
Hi Shellene,
Praise the Lord, indeed! I’m so glad that the Holy Spirit led you to search and find Wives In Touch. He knows what we need when we need it. I pray that you continue to be refreshed in His presence and here at this site. His love never fails, it never gives up, it will never run out on you❣️
Blessings,
Meredith
