Called Together

Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, from your family and your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.” So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him… (Gen. 12:1-2a).

When the Lord spoke to Abram it was understood that Sarai, his wife, would accompany him (see verses 4 and 5). Twenty-five eventful years after leaving his home in Haran, we see Abraham and Sarah renamed, renewed, and recommitted to God’s plan for their lives (Gen. 17, Gen. 21:1-3).

When Paul and I married he was already quite involved in ministry as the assistant pastor at his father’s church. My focus was on being a good and godly wife, but not on being a partner in ministry. I wanted to keep a cute apartment, wear my lingerie, use our wedding gifts, and enjoy being wifey.

It took many years and lots of tears before I realized that we were called together. God’s plan was to marry our strengths and spiritual gifts for the advancement of His Kingdom. While we may not serve in the same capacity, our calling is never to compete against one another but to build up and complement one another while serving the King and His Kingdom.

I’ve been reflecting on this calling since reading the following written about Ravi Zacharias’ widow, Margaret:

“…My mother was entirely committed to my dad’s calling and to this ministry, believing God called them together. I cannot recall even one moment when I saw her commitment to this calling weaken, because she always placed unwavering trust in the God who called them and in His purposes…”

Like Margaret Zacharias and like Sarah, we can be confident in the call as we place unwavering trust in the God who called us and in His purposes.

Amen. This is such an on time word. I’m ashamed to say that I’ve never thought of myself being “called” as well in relation to the ministry that God has entrusted my husband with. Thank you for sharing that you didn’t either as it helps me feel a lot less silly and encourages me to trust God as He leads and guides us both.❤️

Yes, we are called together…even when we fail to realize the “calling.” While watching Adam, our Lord said, “It is not good for man to be alone…” Our mates need our love and support in marriage and in ministry.

Yes, I consider myself a co-laborer with my husband. I am his biggest supporter and his helpmeet.
